For centuries, lovers from around the world have enticed, intrigued and aroused each other in an attempt to master the art of seduction.
Using food as an aphrodisiac is an age old technique with the ‘prey’ often being completely unaware of the suitor’s true intentions.
Here are a few of the most popular ‘In the Mood Foods’ to incorporate into your Valentines Day Menu…
Chocolate –
Chocolate’s reputation as a powerful aphrodisiac lies deeply rooted in the history of Western civilisation.
Not only does the phenylethylamine (PEA) in chocolate release the same hormone as sexual intercourse but eating chocolate also produces natural opiates in the brain which will provide for its ‘feel good’ reputation.
Women who are prone to chocolate cravings (and for whom chocolate will turn on the pleasure sensors in the brain) have been found to be more sexually active than their savoury-loving counterparts – another reason as to why chocolate makes for such a sought after Valentine’s gift!
Tip: Put some thought into your purchase decision. Handcrafted chocolates of either Swiss or Belgian origin are always a winner and sure to impress more than a slab of locally produced top-deck bought at your local supermarket.
Vanilla –
The power of vanilla lies in its aroma. Long before a vanilla scented speck can even reach your tongue, the hypothalamus (the gland that controls memory and emotion) jumps into action and evokes numerous potent feelings which includes sexual arousal.
Tip: Why not light a couple of vanilla scented candles and feed your lover delicate spoons full of creamy vanilla ice-cream drenched in his/her favourite liquor.
Coffee –
With it being the world’s most acceptable stimulant, the aphrodisiac qualities of coffee are very popular amongst adrenalin junkies. Coffee excites both body and mind and medical studies have proven that it increases dopamine levels, which is associated with the pleasure levels of the brain.
To experience the full aphrodisiac power of coffee it is suggested that you skip your daily intake for 3 days and on the morning of day 4 crawl into bed with a freshly brewed cup and start your day with vigour!
Tip: Freshly brewed coffee reigns supreme over those of an instant variety. Waking up to the exhilarating aroma of one of the many terrific blends available is sure to melt even the coldest of hearts.
Red Wine –
Red wine is without a doubt one of the most glorified treasures of the food world. Commonly known to immobilize the free radicals in your body, red wine also has the very pleasurable effect of boosting your libido and that of your lover.
Although the alcohol is effective in helping to break down a few walls, the key of using red wine as an aphrodisiac lies in its scent, with earthy, masculine aromas being said to imitate male pheromones.
Tip: Less is more! Know your personal intake limit and stick to it. Many a date has turned disastrous when one of the parties involved has over-indulged and resorted to an over-emotional drunken stupor.
Figs –

According to a popular legend one of the world’s most erotic acts involves eating a fresh fig, while naked, in front of a woman, because when split down the centre and cradled in a hand it closely resembles a woman’s most desirable unmentionables.
Even for the sceptics amongst us who don’t believe in fables and legends figs prove to be a fine source of iron and potassium-minerals which are much needed in the horizontal pas-de –deux.
Tip: Since not everyone is in the habit of eating figs naked in front of other people try and include figs in your menu for the day. They make a delicious accompaniment to most cheeses and are delicious served with home-made ice cream.
Let your imagination run wild this Valentines, satisfy all the senses and enjoy all the hidden pleasures of your loved one!
